“The Kybalion – 7 Hermetic Principles (Universal Laws)
Fundamental teachings of The Kybalion are in the working Principles to be applied by oneself – a true student who is ready to apply these Principles to their lives will do so successfully, however, if you are not, then it will encourage you to develop yourself into the student, needed to apply these Principles, otherwise they will be just words with no meaning.
‘The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding.’ – The Kybalion
Originating from the teachings in old Egypt, the esoteric and occult teachings have influenced philosophies and nations and people for several thousand years.
Hermes Trismegistus was known as ‘The Master of Masters’; the father of the Occult Wisdom, the founder of Astrology and the discoverer of Alchemy and his last incarnation on this planet, has been argued to have been long before the days of Moses. He is regarded as the contemporary of Abraham and some of the Jewish traditions claim that Abraham acquired some of his mystic knowledge from Hermes himself.
The Egyptians made Hermes one of their Gods under the name of Thoth. In Ancient Greece, they called him Hermes, the god of Wisdom. In present times, we still use the term “hermetic” in the sense of secret, sealed so that nothing can escape, due to followers of Hermes, understanding the principle of secrecy in their teachings.
For all the Hermetic teachings can be found among all religions but never identified with any country or religious sect, the ancient teachers were against allowing the Secret Doctrine to become a part of a creed. Mixing theology with the philosophy as the priests of India and Persia did result in the occultism being lost amidst the mass of religious superstition cults, creeds and ‘Gods’. These teachings are not written in any specific form as it was passed down from Master to student over time and when it was put in writing, it was masked in terms of alchemy and astrology so that only the few could read it correctly. This was of course due to the warring times of the Middle Ages and to avoid theologians being prosecuted.
The Kybalion was a compilation of certain basic Hermetic Doctrines that was passed from teacher to student but unfortunately, the exact meaning of the term has been lost for several centuries. These teachings consisted of the basic principles of The Art of Hermetic Alchemy that dealt in the mastery of Mental Forces rather than Material Elements i.e. to further evolve our Mental Vibrations into alignment with other vibrations rather than changing gold into silver.
Unlike most spiritual based teachings, The Kybalion is somewhat of a “the Master shall appear when the student is ready” type of read; such is the Law of The Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect which I am sure most of you are familiar with.
The Seven Hermetic Principles
- The Principle of Mentalism
- The Principle of Correspondence
- The Principle of Vibration
- The Principle of Polarity
- The Principle of Rhythm
- The Principle of Cause and Effect
- The Principle of Gender
For those who are regular readers of my posts, you will know that I often refer to Universe, Source, God or whichever term you relate to, as ‘All’ just as Maya Angelou described on a Super Soul Sunday interview with Oprah Winfrey. I couldn’t think of a more beautiful term, personally, to describe our creator which leads perfectly to the first Principle.
The Principle of Mentalism
‘The All Is MIND; The Universe is Mental.’ – The Kybalion
THE ALL is in reference to everything we see, experience and feel, including what we do not i.e. Matter or Energy, has been created by ALL; it is Spirit and is referred to as the living Mind as the mind creates everything. I first became aware of this idea whilst researching the works of Buddha, ‘The mind is everything. What you think you become.’ However, I must admit, it has taken several years for me to truly grasp the magnitude of this concept and to realise just how impactful our thoughts are.
The Kybalion is often referred to as the Master-Key a term used throughout religious texts and various bodies of work. The actual phrase has been used since the 17thcentury by The Freemasons whose published works in the 18thcentury included Hiram or The Master Key to the Door of Freemasonry. Some of us may be aware that L. Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz was a 20thcentury, early science fiction novel called The Master Key: An Electrical Fairy Tale that told the story of Rob and the Demon of Electricity in 1901.
The Master Key is believed to be able to unlock the mental and psychic ‘doors’ or gain access to the temple of knowledge that for me, reminds me of Christianity and Hinduism with their references to the body as thy temple and God being described as ‘The Great Architect of the Universe’ also recognised by Rosicrucian’s. As the Master Key is about gaining access to Gods wisdom, the term “Secret Place of the Most High” can also be of relevance found in the Bible Psalm 91:1.
Without the student having access to the Master-Key, Mastery is impossible and the student would be unable to fully access the doors of The Temple or Thy Self.
The Principle of Correspondence
‘As above, so below; as below so above.’ – The Kybalion
This Principle highlights the Correspondence between the laws of Spirit or The Universe and the phenomena of the various planes/realities of Being and Life. The ancient Hermetists considered this Principle as one of the most important mental tools that enable us to move obstacles that concealed the Unknown.
Understanding this Principle of Correspondence enables us to reason with intelligence between what is Known and the Unknown. In laymen terms, this Principle or Law states that our perceived reality is a mirror of what is going on within ourselves. Just as the Michael Jackson song goes ‘Im starting with the Man in The Mirror. I’m asking him to change his ways…if you wanna make the world a better place take a look at yourself and then make a change.’ If we want to change our perceived reality, then we must first change who we are inside.
This is referred to as a Paradigm Shift which I write about often on this site, inclusive of my research into habitual behaviour and neuroplasticity, which you can read about here. Scientifically speaking, it is about learning how to change deep routed patterns of behaviour that most of us are unaware that we even have.
By focussing solely on what we truly desire and eliminate what we deem ‘negative’ thoughts or, thoughts that we do NOT want to occur in our reality, we can then begin to be the architects of our own reality and or create the world we want to live in. It is also useful to note that given this understanding, there are in fact no opposites; we are all energy as explained in the next Principle, therefore, at the root of ALL, is energy and what we perceive as opposite, for example, Hot and Cold water are not the opposites of one another, but merely the absence of heat and vice versa.
The Principle of Vibration
‘Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.’ – The Kybalion
This Principle is understanding that everything is in constant motion and everything has a vibration that thankfully, Modern Science now confirms. Of course, you may be familiar already with this Principle given the works of Albert Einstein and his founding of E=MC2 however, let’s not forget that this Hermetic Principle was discovered thousands of years ago by the Masters of Ancient Egypt.
According to The Secret of The Ankh:
It is now thought that the hieroglyph Ankh; “The Life Code, can no longer be defined as “the meaning of life” but symbolises “the creation of Life” itself, and the translation ought to be looked upon linguistically.
The hieroglyphic Ankh as seen above, is symbolically and controversially, the original Amen. In ancient Egypt, Amen or Amun – from the Egyption God Amun- Ra – was a deity represented by a ram, the god of life and reproduction.
Here is how the Ankh has been translated:
The heiroglypic symbol of an Eagle represents the letter ‘A’ in our alphabet. The Eagle is often depicted as the head of Amun-Ra meaning, perspicacity, courage, strength and immortality, but is also considered “king of the skies” and messenger of the highest gods.
The wave represents travelling at infinite speed/time (he/het) and translates as the letter ‘N’.
The sieve or circle with lines throughout, are letters ‘K & H’ which respresents energy and the separating of darkness and light (kek, keket).
Within Neb Kheperas Ra golden Ankh- the fourth name of Pharaoh Tutankhamun – shows Anun-Ra placed within the Ankh Loop, respresenting an evolutionary train of events.
Incredibly, this matches perfectly with Albert Einstein’s E=MC2; (E) (Everything is Energy) and energy equals to matter (MC2) from his published work “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content?” in 1905.
That aside, this Principle differentiates the many manifestations of Matter, Energy, Mind and Spirit which are, varying rates of Vibration. The higher the vibration, the higher the position in the scale and vice versa. Hermetic students, would through the practice of this Principle, be able to conquer the Natural phenomena in many ways.
The Principle of Polarity
“Everything is Duel; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.” – The Kybalion
This Principle explains the old Hermetic axioms: “everything is dual; everything has two poles everything has its pair of opposites”. Opposites are just two extremes of the same thing as everything is the same energy/vibrational energy.
On the Mental Plane, an example would be ‘Love and Hate’ two mental states that we view as completely opposite but are in fact one but varying in degrees of emotion that have no beginning and no end, we, therefore, use ‘Like’ or ‘Dislike’ that act as shades to blend the variant degrees of emotional power.
Through the application of this Principle, Hermetic students can transform Evil into Good based on Polarity. This Principle of Polarity is also deemed “Mental Alchemy” that enables us to change our own Polarity as well as that of others if enough time is spent studying this art.
The Principle of Rhythm
“Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.” – The Kybalion
This Principle shows us that in everything there is a manifested measured motion, “to and fro” between the two poles which exist in accordance with the Principle of Polarity above.
There is always an action and a reaction; an advance and a retreat, a rising and a sinking and so on and so forth. This includes the entire Universe as a whole; suns, worlds, people, animals, the mind, energy and matter and as a result, Hermetists find the understanding of this Principle to be most important as just as we can create worlds we too can destroy them.
Hermetists have applied the Mental Law of Neutralization which means that even though they are unable to annul the principle or Cause it to stop its operation, they can escape its effects to a certain degree, depending on how advanced they are in their Mastery.
It is important to learn how to USE this Principle rather than be USED BY it as we all actively play a part in it subconsciously but using it consciously through the use of our Will maintains a degree of Mental Firmness as supposed to be swung back and forth.
The Principle of Cause and Effect
“Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect had its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognised; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law.” – The Kybalion.
This Principle states that there is a Cause for every Effect and an Effect for every Cause. Everything ultimately happens in accordance with this Law; there are no coincidences, no such thing as ‘chance’. The Hermetists show that the methods of rising above the ordinary plane of Cause and Effect are therefore able, mentally, to become Causers instead of Effects.
Masters of this Principle can change their moods, characters, qualities and powers as well as dictate their surroundings and become Movers or Creators instead of chess pieces.
The Principle of Gender
“Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and Feminine Principles Gender; manifests on all planes.” – The Kybalion.
This Principle determines that there is GENDER manifested in everything – the Masculine and Feminine Principles are always at work in the Physical, Mental and Spiritual planes.
On the Physical plane, this manifest as SEX – male or female but both inclusive of one another. No creation, physical, mental or spiritual is possible without the Principle of Gender and works in the direction of generation, regeneration and creation. Everything and every person contain the two Elements of Principles with it, him or her. Every Male thing has the Female Element and vice versa.
Have you discovered The Kybalion, 7 Hermetic Principles yet? I will go into detail on all 7 of the Principles and how to implement them in separate blog posts as I too am very intrigued as to this practice and the History of the teachings.
