Interviewing The Luxury Travel Diva: How Marie Built A Successful Luxury Travel Blog
A Luxury Worldwide Travel Blog
Website: Luxury Travel Diva
What Inspired you to become self-employed?
I didn’t like working for other people. Freedom to choose and do what I want is very important to me.
How did you come up with your idea or concept for your blog?
We visited a gorgeous resort in Sri Lanka and a group of scruffy looking bloggers were on a Press Trip at the hotel. It was a light bulb moment for me. I just thought “I can do that! “ We actually stay in Luxurious places and my friends around the world do too!
You write for many magazines, have you always enjoyed writing? Did the magazines approach you or did you contact them?
I am terribly lazy and turn down most things. It has to be something I really want to do. I refuse anything that doesn’t fit with my luxury brand. It is important to build up good media contacts. They find me rather than the other way around. I think my social media is really my shop window.
Can you tell us more about your upcoming book and mention any tips for aspiring authors? My book! It is sitting in a file waiting to be written! I need some tips myself, to be honest. A desert island with no distractions would be perfect for book writing.
This may be a tough question, but what has been your favourite place to write about and why?The South of France is one of my favourite places. We spend a lot of time there and never tire of the Cote d’Azur.
Do you advertise your blog and if so, what platforms do you use and recommend? Any tips for other bloggers who wish to reach more people? No, I don’t advertise my blog. Good SEO is essential, search engines account for 40% of my blog traffic. My advice would be to visit lesser known places, you will not have so much competition from other bloggers. Flipboard can be a good place for blog posts to be read. Also, concentrate on a niche market.
To what do you owe your success?I have absolutely no idea why my blog is a success, to be honest! There are not many older bloggers so I fill a gap in the market. Work hard and have a strong focus, it will take time to build up a following and always be consistent to maintain an audience. I love it! If it stops being interesting and fun I will stop.
Do you have any employees you have recruited?
I do everything myself! After a disastrous trial with a Virtual Assistant and I am a control freak too.
What goals do you have for your blog?
My goals are simple really. I hope to keep growing my following and exploring the world I love the excitement of setting off somewhere, the thrill is just as great every time I go somewhere. Meeting new people and new experiences make every trip special.
What has been the biggest lesson?
My biggest mistake was not paying for someone to design a website for me. I wasted so many stressful hours bumbling along by myself trying to understand all the complicated technology!
What made you choose this industry/type of blog?
I just write about my life and try to be honest at all times. I only accept invites to places that interest me and I want to visit.
Do you help the community or any charities? Yes, I do have my favourite charities. I have supported them for years and they are my focus.
You recently featured in the commercial for Boost Oxegyn. How did you get involved with this company and what did you learn? Oxygen invited me to take part in an advert. I love the product and use it every day. It was a real pleasure to take part in filming, something I had never done and to represent women over 40 too!
Have you ever turned down a job offer before?
Yes, I turn down things on a daily basis. Anything to do with gambling or products that I don’t like, that sort of thing.
If you have a piece of advice for someone starting a business or a blog (now both the same), what would you tell them?
My advice would be to get help from a website expert to set up the blog. Grow your Social Media before you start a blog, network with other bloggers and visit travel industry events. None of which I did myself!
How do you define the word LUXURY?
Luxury has a different meaning for everyone. I like to travel in style, wear great clothes and stay in lovely villa’s or hotels, go to amazing restaurants and living life to the full. That is luxury for me! But it can also be my husband bringing me breakfast in bed and the small things in life.
Where do you feel most at home?
I have a beautiful home in England and it is wonderful to come back. I appreciate it so much more when I return from a trip.
Do you think women can truly have it all?
We are so lucky to be living in 2017! Women can do whatever they want and can definitely have it all.
I really enjoyed interviewing Marie as part of my entrepreneurship series, we have been avid supporters of one another since I first started on Instagram and my business which is wonderful. It is really inspiring when women support women.
